September 18, 2002 – U.S. House Agriculture Committee Chairman Larry Combest (R-Texas) issued the following statement following Secretary of Agriculture Ann Veneman's announcement Wednesday that she has been diagnosed with a very early and treatable form of breast cancer.

"Secretary Veneman's grace and positive resolve is heartening to all of us as we welcome news that her full recovery is expected.

"We are all pleased that Ann has received such a positive prognosis on her illness. I am sure that I can speak for my colleagues who have worked closely with her in wishing her a speedy recovery.

"I admire Ann Veneman's determination to continue in her role as Secretary of Agriculture while she undergoes treatment for breast cancer. The continuity of leadership she can provide during the difficult process of implementing major farm program changes remains important to all of agriculture.

"Madam Secretary, our thoughts and prayers are with you."
