WASHINGTON – This week during The Ag Minute, Chairman Frank Lucas, discusses that one of the challenges members of the agriculture community face is that their success in providing a safe, affordable, and abundant food supply causes them to be taken for granted by Americans living in our suburbs and cities. Chairman Lucas emphasizes the importance of advocating for America's farmers and ranchers.

"Thomas Jefferson once wrote that ‘agriculture is our wisest pursuit and cultivators of the earth are the most valuable citizens.’
"Those sentiments are as true today as they were centuries ago when our country was just beginning.
"America’s farmers and ranchers are the original conservationists, the original environmentalists, and they ensure that our citizens and the people around the globe have enough to eat.
"American agriculture’s success is demonstrated by the fact we enjoy the safest, most abundant, and most affordable food and fiber supply in the history of the world.
"Unfortunately, this fact is often taken for granted by many who are removed from the countryside, who are not directly involved with producing our food and fiber.
"Recently, we celebrated National Agriculture Day and I had a chance to visit with members of the FFA, as well as other young agricultural leaders from around the country. It was great to see their excitement and pride for agriculture.
"We need to build on that enthusiasm and use it as a way to educate consumers and others who may not fully appreciate the efforts and hard work of our farmers and ranchers.
"Frankly, as the Agriculture Committee prepares to write the 2012 Farm Bill, we need your help in getting the attention of my colleagues who may not be on the committee, who may not be from the countryside, and who may not know just how important American agriculture is to our country.
"We need a corps of citizen activists who care about the future of production agriculture and rural America. We need folks who are ready to tell the story of how agriculture continues to be our wisest pursuit."
The Ag Minute is Chairman Lucas's weekly radio address that is released each week from the House Agriculture Committee.
