House Agriculture Committee approves H.R. 1599, the Safe and Accurate Food Labeling Act

Today, the House Agriculture Committee approved H.R. 1599, the Safe and Accurate Food Labeling Act of 2015. First introduced by Reps. Mike Pompeo (R-KS) and G.K. Butterfield (D-NC), the legislation has evolved through bipartisan discussions between the Agriculture Committee and the Energy and Commerce Committee. The amendment in the nature of a substitute, offered by Rep. Davis (R-IL), for H.R. 1599 will provide clarity and stability in the marketplace through national uniformity regarding marketing claims for products grown using the latest agricultural production technologies.

Subcommittee Continues Review of International Food Aid Programs

Today, the House Agriculture Committee continued its review of U.S. international food aid programs by holding a hearing on oversight and accountability of the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) and U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), the agencies responsible for administering U.S. international food assistance programs. The Committee heard from both the U.S. Government Accountability Office (GAO) as well as the respective Offices of Inspector General from both USAID and USDA.

Conaway and Rouzer send letters to USAID, USDA, and MARAD asking for answers

Today, House Agriculture Committee Chairman K. Michael Conaway (R-TX), joined by Livestock and Foreign Agriculture Subcommittee Chairman David Rouzer (R-NC), sent a letter to administrators at the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), U.S. Maritime Administration (MARAD), and U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) requesting answers by July 21, 2015, to recent news reports suggesting closed-door negotiations to amend or change the Maritime Security Program (MSP) in a way that would have dire consequences for the delivery of U.S. in-kind food aid.

Subcommittee Reviews USDA Marketing Programs

Today, Rep. Rodney Davis (IL-13), Chairman of the House Agriculture Committee Subcommittee on Biotechnology, Horticulture, and Research, held a public hearing to review the United States Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) marketing programs. Dr. Craig Morris, Deputy Administrator of the USDA Agriculture Marketing Service (AMS) Livestock and Seed Program provided an overview of AMS programs that facilitate the marketing of U.S. agricultural products. Members also touched on ongoing efforts with the Energy and Commerce Committee to create a uniform, science-based, national framework governing the use of labeling claims regarding genetically engineered food or food ingredients.
