WASHINGTON – Today, Agriculture Committee Chairman Collin Peterson and a broad group of Members of Congress and organizations supporting a strong Renewable Fuel Standard (RFS) in the energy bill outlined the benefits of a RFS for national security, rural revitalization and energy independence.
The RFS provision of the Energy Independence and Security Act will establish a minimum content of renewable fuel that refiners must use each year through 2022. The provision also includes a separate mandate for biodiesel and will encourage the use cellulosic sources for biofuels.
Peterson was joined by Members of Congress from districts across the country who support the RFS provision and by groups representing veterans, national security experts, agriculture producers, the religious community and the renewable fuels industry.
Joining Chairman Peterson to voice their support for a strong RFS in the energy bill were Congressman Eliot Engel of New York, Congresswoman Stephanie Herseth Sandlin of South Dakota, Congressman Tim Mahoney of Florida, Congresswoman Melissa Bean of Illinois, Congressman Dennis Moore of Kansas, and Congresswoman Marcy Kaptur of Ohio.
Organizations participating in the event included the Renewable Fuels Association, National Biodiesel Board, New Fuels Alliance, Southern Ethanol Council, National Farmers Union, American Farm Bureau Federation, National Corn Growers Association, National Grain Sorghum Producers, National Association of Wheat Growers, AMVETS, Jewish Council for Public Affairs and the Truman National Security Project.
“The renewable fuel industry continues to grow at an impressive rate, and now we need to update the Renewable Fuel Standard to keep that progress on track,” Chairman Peterson said. “The support for RFS from Members of Congress from districts as different as Congressman Engel’s in New York City and mine in rural Minnesota shows broad agreement about the role that the biofuels industry will play to reduce our dependence on foreign oil.”
