Nutrition Subcommittee Holds Hearing to Review Duplication and Areas of Unmet Needs in Government Nutrition Programs
Today, Rep. Jackie Walorski (IN-2), Chairwoman of the House Agriculture Committee’s Subcommittee on Nutrition held a hearing on duplication and unmet needs in government nutrition programs. The subcommittee heard from researchers and practitioners who have first-hand experience of how the many federal nutrition programs serve families in need of assistance. The repeated theme among the panel was a need for greater administrative efficiency to ensure that target populations continued to be served. This hearing is part of the committee’s ongoing review of the Past, Present, and Future of SNAP, currently known as the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program and formerly referred to as food stamps.

Today is the final day for the public to comment on 2015 Dietary Guidelines for Americans. House Agriculture Committee Chairman K. Michael Conaway (R-TX) has raised concerns that the Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee greatly exceeded its scope and used potentially biased methodologies in developing recommendations for the Secretaries of United States Department of Agriculture and the United States Department of Health and Human Services.
House Agriculture Committee Holds Hearing on the Role of the Charitable Sector in Feeding the Hungry
Today the House Committee on Agriculture held a hearing on the vital role that the charitable sector plays in feeding vulnerable Americans. Yesterday, Vicky Hartzler (R-MO) along with 70 Members of Congress, including House Agriculture Committee Chairman K. Michael Conaway (R-TX) and House Appropriations Agriculture Subcommittee Chairman Robert Aderholt (R-AL), sent a letter to Department of Health and Humans Services Secretary Burwell and Department of Agriculture Secretary Vilsack expressing concerns with the report issued by the 2015 Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee (DGAC) and certain recommendations for the Dietary Guidelines for Americans (DGA).
Agriculture Committee Chairman Conaway Statement on the Announcement of Historic 2014 Farm Bill SNAP Work Pilots
This morning, Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack announced the selection of 10 Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) Employment and Training (E&T) pilot projects designed to help recipients prepare for and go to work. The pilot projects were authorized under Section 4022 of the bipartisan Agricultural Act of 2014.
