House Agriculture Committee Action
On Thursday, June 22, the House Agriculture Committee held a hearing to discuss investments in agricultural research as a continuation of the committee’s hearing series on preparing for the next farm bill. Chairman K. Michael Conaway (TX-11) and members of the committee heard from various university representatives on the opportunities and challenges institutions face in ensuring the U.S. remains a world leader in agricultural research and scientific advancement.

House Highlights
On Tuesday, the House passed five bills to strengthen families, the foster care system and outcomes for young adults moving out of the system. The bills include: H.R. 2742, the Modernizing the Interstate Placement of Children in Foster Care Act; H.R. 2866, the Reducing Barriers for Relative Foster Parents Act; H.R. 2834, the Partnership Grants to Strengthen Families Affected by Parental Substance Abuse Act; H.R. 2857, the Supporting Families in Substance Abuse Treatment Act; and H.R. 2847, the Improving Services for Older Youth in Foster Care Act.

On Wednesday, the House passed H.R. 1873, the Electricity Reliability and Forest Protection Act, which would amend the Federal Land Policy and Management Act of 1976 to enhance the reliability of the electricity grid and reduce the threat of wildfires to and from electric transmission and distribution facilities on Federal lands by facilitating vegetation management on such lands.

On Thursday, the House passed H.R. 1654, the Water Supply Permitting Coordination Act, which would authorize the Secretary of the Interior to coordinate Federal and State permitting processes relating to the construction of new surface water storage projects on lands under the jurisdiction of the Secretary of the Interior and the Secretary of Agriculture and designates the Bureau of Reclamation as the lead agency for permit processing.

On Friday, the House passed H.R. 2842, the Accelerating Individuals into the Workforce Act, which would connect low-income Americans looking for work with employers looking to fill job openings, including through apprenticeships and other forms of on-the-job training.
