"We have an expression in Oklahoma that says ‘there's a fine line between doing things for people and doing things to people.'

"My friends, the folks in Massachusetts and a good slice of America have decided that whether it's cap and trade or national health care, this administration and this Democratic majority in the House are not doing things for them, but to them.

"The Democratic majority in the House may set the legislative agenda, but as the conscience of the body, my fellow Republicans and I must make sure that our friends on the other side of the aisle understand what's really going on in rural America, in agriculture. And, what we need to be doing for the American people.

"We must remain vigilant to ensure that the unwise ideas of this administration that would cripple agriculture, like cap and trade, do not become law.

"We must all work our way out of this budget mess and rein in reckless spending while trying to maintain the essential elements of the farm safety net.

"We must encourage the administration to act on opening up trade opportunities overseas for our farmers and ranchers. Foreign markets are critical to the economic viability of rural America.

"Finally, we must remember that doing things for the American people sometimes means just getting government out of the way."

The Ag Minute is Ranking Member Lucas' weekly radio address that is released each Tuesday from the House Agriculture Committee Republicans.
