Rouzer, Conaway: Dairy Hearing Highlighted Vital Importance of USMCA Approval

Washington, D.C. – Today the House Agriculture Livestock and Foreign Agriculture Subcommittee held a hearing on the challenging economic times in the dairy industry. After the hearing, Subcommittee Ranking Member David Rouzer (NC-7) and Committee Ranking Member K. Michael Conaway (TX-11) made the following remarks:

“Members walked away with a clear message from today’s subcommittee hearing – USMCA can’t be approved soon enough. With additional access for U.S. dairy products and the elimination of Canadian Class 6 and 7 dairy pricing strategies, we’ve heard time and again that the U.S. dairy industry stands to benefit from the renegotiated trade deal. No legislation, no program will benefit producers like improvements to market access and we must do all we can to approve this trade agreement in short order,” said Subcommittee Ranking Member Rouzer.

“The dairy industry couldn’t be more clear: pass USMCA. We know producers are struggling and the main hope for recovery lies with trade. While members continue repeating the economic significance of USMCA, what remains to be seen is whether my colleagues on the other side of the aisle will heed the ag industry’s calls. After the recent release of the long-awaited International Trade Commission report, Speaker Pelosi should make preparations to bring USMCA to a vote in the House as soon as possible. Our farmers can’t afford to wait,” said Ranking Member Conaway.
