Committee Holds Second Farm Bill Hearing

House Committee on Agriculture Chairman Bob Goodlatte today convened the second field hearing to review the 2002 Farm Bill. The hearing follows a field hearing held yesterday in Fayetteville, N.C. and is part of a series of hearings the Committee plans to conduct around the country. Fifteen members of the Committee attended today’s hearing and heard from two panels of witnesses about a variety of farm policy issues including specialty crops, peanuts, incentives for young farmers, payments, forestry, and crop insurance.

“These hearings are designed to give producers an opportunity to share their thoughts about what aspects of the current farm bill are working and which ones need to be modified. American agriculture employs over 24 million Americans and is vital to our economy. Today’s farmers and ranchers face extraordinary challenges in the farming business including the constant threat of weather related disasters, potential increases in government regulation and trade related issues. We need to ensure that our producers have a strong farm policy to rely on and this is why it is so important to hear from our producers,” said Chairman Goodlatte.

The hearing was hosted by Members of the Alabama delegation including Terry Everett, Jo Bonner and Mike Rogers on the Auburn University campus. At least 200 members of the community attended today’s hearing including local producers, agriculture officials, and students.
