Goodlatte Welcomes New Agriculture Secretary; Mike Johanns nominated to President's Cabinet
Washington, DC,
December 2, 2004
, D.C. Chairman Bob Goodlatte made the following statement regarding the nomination of Mike Johanns to the President's Cabinet: "On behalf of the House Agriculture Committee, I would like to congratulate Governor Johanns on his nomination to the position of Secretary of Agriculture and look forward to working with him on issues facing America 's farmers, ranchers and foresters. Growing up on a dairy farm, Governor Johanns learned the strong work ethic of the family farm and has continued to work for farmers as Governor. The Governor hails from the agriculturally diverse state of Nebraska . Nebraska is an important agricultural state and is one of the leading producers of agricultural products in the nation. He also serves as co-chairman for the Western Governors' Association on drought issues and worked to secure drought assistance for producers in Nebraska. The Committee has worked in coordination with Agriculture Secretary Ann Veneman to diligently to create effective farm policies. On behalf of the Committee, I want to offer our thanks and best wishes to Secretary Veneman. She has ably served the farmers and ranchers of America as the Secretary of Agriculture for four years. During that period many changes have taken place for U.S. agriculture, including the 2002 Farm Bill, the Healthy Forests Initiative and several trade agreements with significant impact on U.S. agriculture. I have personally enjoyed working with Secretary Veneman and I know that she will continue her contributions to the United States farm and food sector in whatever endeavor she chooses in the future." ### |
