December 11, 2002 – House Agriculture Forestry Subcommittee Chairman Bob Goodlatte (R-VA) today welcomed steps President Bush advanced Wednesday to protect America's wildlife and forests from another season of raging wildfires.

"The summer's fire season leveled towering forests into inches of ash and charred stubble, denying wildlife forage and shelter this winter, and by spring melt, unstable hillsides will again wash down to clog streams and water reservoirs. The president's leadership demonstrates that we can revitalize and protect our forests with confidence in a straightforward public review of plans to stabilize forest areas with re-seeding new forests and removing charred rubble. In two months, fire season will again approach forest communities and the public can now expect a concise and effective review instead of years of legal wrangling, piles of paperwork and fiddling while forests burn," said Bob Goodlatte (R-VA), Chairman of the House Agriculture Subcommittee on Forestry.
