Bipartisan Lincoln-Hutchinson Bill Offers Strong Safety Net, Planting Flexibility

November 9, 2001 -- U.S. House of Representatives Agriculture Committee Chairman Larry Combest (R-TX) and Ranking Democrat Charlie Stenholm (D-TX) today praised a bipartisan farm bill introduced today by U.S. Senators Blanche Lincoln (D-AR) and Tim Hutchinson (R-AR), along with Senators Jesse Helms (R-NC), Zell Miller (D-GA), Mary Landrieu (D-LA), and John Breaux (D-LA).

"We commend Senators Blanche Lincoln (D-AR) and Tim Hutchinson (R-AR) for their strong bipartisan leadership in advancing the cause of a new farm bill this year. Senators have obviously been listening to America's farmers and ranchers because the bill they introduce today is what the farmers and ranchers from every region of the country have been asking for.
Like the House-passed Farm Security Act, the Lincoln-Hutchinson bill not only provides for a strong safety net, but it maintains planting flexibility and avoids harmful market distortions -- two important considerations sacrificed under other farm bill proposals. Also like the House-passed bill, the Lincoln-Hutchinson bill complies with our WTO commitments and with the Budget Resolution passed by Congress while increasing investment in conservation programs to the highest levels ever.
With the introduction of this legislation by Senators Lincoln and Hutchinson, we are confident that the Senate will join the House in passing a strong farm bill this year that America's farmers and ranchers can count on."
