House Agriculture Committee Examines Retailer Perspectives when Serving SNAP Recipients

Washington, D.C. - Today, the House Agriculture Committee held a hearing to examine how retailers effectively partner with the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) to provide food assistance to low-income families. This hearing is a continuation of the committee’s top-to-bottom review, the Past, Present, and Future of SNAP, to hear various perspectives on ways in which the program can be improved for the recipient, taxpayer, and partners working to carry out the program. Members heard from a regional convenience store and a national grocery chain about the opportunities and challenges they face while executing SNAP. “Retailers may vary in size and distribution, but one thing they have in common is their dedication to serving SNAP recipients and making sure people in both urban and rural communities have access to the food they need. I am pleased to hear that many retailers, like those that testified before us today, are finding innovative ways to best serve their customers, such as providing a shuttle service for customers who lack transportation, delivery services for homebound customers, and nutrition education to help families make healthy choices. As a committee, we must encourage this type of community engagement and ensure all policy options we consider in Washington do not make it harder for families to put food on the table,” said Chairman K.
