Thompson, Comer Statement on GAO Report on Foreign Ownership of U.S. Farmland

Following the publication of a requested report on foreign ownership and investment in U.S. farmland by the Government Accountability Office (GAO), House Committee on Agriculture Chairman Glenn “GT” Thompson and House Committee on Oversight and Accountability Chairman James Comer issued the following statement:

“Growing foreign ownership of U.S. farmland, particularly by China, poses a direct threat to our food security and national security. Safeguarding our farmland and food supply requires a whole of government approach and we will continue to work with the impacted agencies, related committees, and leadership to continue our robust oversight and to identify legislative vehicles to address the findings of the GAO report.”

Background:

In October 2022, Chairman Thompson, Chairman Comer, and 128 of their colleagues requested a study regarding foreign investment in U.S. farmland and its impact on national security, trade, and food security.
